Materials scientists will play a critical role in how we utilize our finite resources to their fullest potential. Sustainability in the context of materials may refer to smarter battery technology that requires fewer materials, technology that allows the production of energy from waste material, organic LED's in which the emissive electroluminescent layer is a film of organic compound, or the devlopment of new sustainable materials and processes.
Sustainability at Penn State
Penn State is fully committed to promoting sustainability research. The univeristy envisions a comprehensive integration of sustainability into research, teaching, outreach, and operations that prepares students, faculty, and staff to be sustainability leaders in their professional, personal, and civic lives. Within the Materials Science and Engineering department, many of our faculty are conducting research to promote a sustainable future.
