The Friends of MatSE (FOM) program has proven to be a valuable partnership for both industry and MatSE. Through FOM, connections between companies and the department are deepened, enriching educational experiences while introducing students to industry priorities, capabilities, and goals.
Over the past year, contributions from FOM members—Arkema, EXpressLO LLC, and Product Evaluation Systems (PES)—have funded educational initiatives, technology upgrades, and research advancements. These resources ensure MatSE’s continued leadership in materials science education and research, fostering an environment where creativity and experimentation can thrive.
“EXpressLO LLC joined the FOM program to give back to MatSE and to support students and their education,” said Lucille A. Giannuzzi, Ph.D., president of EXpressLO LLC. “When I was a graduate student in the department, I benefited from a similar program, which allowed me to attend a conference providing an invaluable experience.”
FOM has provided significant benefits to students, faculty, and staff in two key areas: maintaining state-of-the-art laboratories that encourage innovation and experimentation, and funding departmental events that promote engagement and a strong sense of belonging.
“My experiences with the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences and the Applied Research Lab laid the foundation for a successful career at PES,” said Walt Moorhead, president of PES. “Joining FOM allows us to give back while offering PES team members opportunities to engage with MatSE personnel and projects.”
In today’s competitive landscape, organizations are seeking a workforce with the skills, knowledge, and experience necessary to meet industry demands. MatSE graduates are well-prepared to meet these needs, and FOM allows companies to position themselves as potential employers beyond the annual career fair.
“We are constantly looking for new talent to add to our EXpressLO family, and as an FOM member, we gain firsthand access to Penn State graduates,” Giannuzzi said.
Alumni take pride in hiring MatSE graduates, recognizing the quality of their education and experiences at Penn State. “PES’s testing services help assure a safer world for all,” said Moorhead. “Our PSU-trained metallurgists work closely with clients to ensure that their materials and products meet or exceed expectations.”
Participating companies benefit from access to top-tier students, priority reservations for on-campus interviews, and visibility at high-profile events such as MatSE Appreciation Day. Members are also invited to participate in classroom programs and gain recognition on the MatSE website and social media platforms.
The Friends of MatSE program continues to forge lasting relationships between industry leaders and one of the nation’s premier materials science departments, creating a collaborative ecosystem that propels the field forward. To learn more about the program, visit matse.psu.edu/FOM.
